Today’s Teas: Nutcracker Black Tea, Drum Mountain Clouds & Mist, & Savannah Rooibos

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

On this nice Autumn Saturday, we are featuring three teas you can come and sample for free.

Nutcracker Black Tea is a fun holiday black tea with all the comforting spices to please your senses and get you in the holiday cheer. Black tea blended with apple bits, orange peels, currants, cinnamon, almond flakes, cloves, safflowers, and flavoring.

Drum Mountain Clouds & Mist (Gua Shan Yun Wu) green tea comes from China’s high mountains, offering a light, delicate, sweet melon taste but a complexity that is beautiful. The Clouds & Mist teas are generally darker as a dry leaf, due to the tea plant’s production of more chlorophyll because of the lack of light in the cloudy environment. This is Jonathan’s new favorite green tea!

Savannah Rooibos is a great herbal blend with rich flavors of cocoa pieces, almond bits, and chocolate-rum flavoring. During these cool months, this makes a great dessert drink with sweetener and whipped cream on top!

Today’s Teas: Natela’s Gold, Sterling Silver Needles, & Hook ‘Em Horns

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Most are probably recovering from overeating at Thanksgiving, so come and relax and enjoy the teas we have on sample today. We are open our normal hours today and tomorrow and will be open Monday through December.

Natela’s Gold: Handmade in the peak of the Spring season, Natela brings this treasured tea to you from the Caucasus Mountains in the country Georgia. This black tea has a sweetness with hints of pine and cedar, making it a wonderful tea for afternoon or evening. Enjoy it while supplies last! This tea is similar to the Georgian Beauty tea we also sell, so if you like the Georgian Beauty you’ll also enjoy this one!

Sterling Silver Needles is our newest white tea. The new batch of 2008 white tea is full of the delights of a Yin Zhen or Silver Needle tea from Fujian, China. The leaf buds are delicate and beautiful, full of Bai Hao, or White Down, little fuzzy hairs that cover the buds and offer the sweet delicate taste that makes white tea so wonderful.

Hook ‘Em Horns (Blood Orange) Herbal Fruit Tea: Texas Longhorn fans are celebrating their win over the Texas A&M Aggies. Our tribute tea is a citrus lover’s dream, with blood orange flavor. It’s a naturally caffeine free herbal blend of apple bits, hibiscus, rosehips, orange, and lemon peels & flavoring.

Afternoon Tea at the Driskill

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Jonathan & Amy: Afternoon Tea at the Driskill Hotel

Jonathan & Amy: Afternoon Tea at the Driskill Hotel

Amy and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Driskill Hotel for their Victorian Afternoon Tea. For me, the ambiance alone is reason enough to have afternoon tea at the Driskill; its legendary, grand presence, bringing together past and present elegance, is like none other.

We loved that the afternoon tea began with a glass of sparkling wine, making it a Royal Tea, by definition. (It reminded us of our wedding, as we had the honor of staying at the Driskill for our wedding night.) This was a fun way to celebrate the wonderful blessings in our lives.

Next we were served individual pots of Tea Embassy’s Nutcracker black tea along with the 1886 Cafe’s incredible scones. The hot scones are hard to beat anywhere, and they were served with lemon curd, devonshire cream and strawberry preserves. We piled on the lemon curd, as it is both of our favorite. The devonshire cream is wonderfully light.

The next course includes the tea tray, a three-tiered tray full of beautiful savories and sweets. My favorite sandwich was the prosciutto apricot one, Amy enjoyed the salmon; the deviled egg sandwich was great, too. We were almost too full to even try the sweets, but enjoyed them nonetheless. They included coconut macaroons, a strawberry mousse petit four, a cream puff, chocolate truffle, chocolate covered strawberries and several others.

The staff is lovely, completing the superb service and wonderous ambiance.  Since Tea Embassy will not be serving Afternoon Tea this Holiday season, the Driskill’s Victorian Afternoon Tea is an alternative that will not disappoint!

You can call to make a reservation, 512-391-7066, December 4 through December 16 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. $48 per person plus tax and gratuity.

Georgian Village:

Georgian Village Tea

Georgian Village Tea

We feel very fortunate to have a limited amount of this special 2007 black tea from Nagobilevi, a Georgian village set up in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains near the Black Sea. The tea from this high altitude plantation has a distinctive aroma-notes of apple, citrus, honey and rose with a higher tannin but lower caffeine content. Because of Georgia’s geography and meterology, the teas in this region contain microzones, which add more depth to the character of the tea. The Georgian Village Tea made by families is quite sweet and steeps nicely for at least two infusions, at boiling temperature, 212 degrees Fahrenheit, for 4-6 minutes.

Georgian Beauty:

Another tea we feel very fortunate to have a limited amount of this special black tea from the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains near the Black Sea. The tea from this high altitude plantation has a distinctive taste, likened to an Oriental Beauty oolong, thus the name, Georgian Beauty, yielding a rich honey flavor with a beautifully refreshing finish. Because of Georgia’s geography and meterology, the teas in this region contain microzones, which add more depth to the character of the tea. The Georgian Beauty Tea may be steeped for at least two infusions, at boiling temperature, 212 degrees Fahrenheit, for 4-6 minutes.

Georgian Treasure: An excellent black tea from Georgia on the Black Sea. The tea from this part of the world has a sweet overtone, making it a great tea for morning, afternoon, or evening.
